She lives an hour from the city in a settlement where "at risk" isn't a label anyone chose — it's just Tuesday. The pressures pulling her away from school are daily and real. The right equipment, the right mentor, and a skill she can build on could change the entire trajectory of her life.
In 1854, Nepal's legal code classified the Tamang people under a category that could legally be enslaved. Though caste-based discrimination was formally abolished in 1963, more than a century of marginalization left a lasting impact — many Tamang, Dalit, and Janajati youth today face poverty and limited access to opportunity that no amount of talent alone can overcome. Dawa has the hands, the mind, and the will. He just needs someone to open the door.
Leaving exploitative work is a beginning, not an ending — but only if there's somewhere real to land. The barrier isn't willingness. It's the absence of economic alternatives. With vocational training and transitional support, walking away doesn't have to mean starting from nothing.
In the settlements outside Mumbai, programs exist — but they're waiting on equipment. A sewing machine. A computer. The tools most of us take for granted can anchor a teenager's future and open a door that poverty has kept shut.
The Tamang are one of Nepal's largest indigenous groups — alongside Dalit and Janajati communities, they face compounding barriers of historical discrimination, poverty, and almost no pathways to decent work. We fund full vocational training placements — curriculum, instruction, materials, and job placement support — for young people these systems were designed to exclude.
In India and the Philippines, men and women alike find themselves trapped in exploitative situations with no visible way out. We fund the counseling and vocational services that make a real transition possible and sustainable.
One Weave is a new organization. We have the partnerships, the mission, and consultants on the ground in India, Nepal, and the Philippines. What we're building now is the infrastructure to sustain it all — staffing, administration, technology, and the capacity to steward every dollar well.
